She grew up with her mom's side. She stated that her skin color was the primary reason she felt excluded by her peers when she was when she was a young child. [3] Her parents struggled with financial issues. They were constantly on the move and had to move 16 times in order to help support their father's work. Russell revealed that despite this, Russell said that she was always interested in creativity from the age of a child. She hoped to be a ballet dancer and then to be an artist. Russell was 18 when she took her first acting class. She used the money she earned from work to buy a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. Once her money was gone and she returned home, she went back to work, until she was able to earn enough to audition again. It went on for four years until she finally got her first TV role on television.
